DB STEWART toils with religious trauma, guilt, and shame on new single “Save My Soul (Reborn)”

FFO: ZZ Ward, Aerosmith, Green Day, Tom Petty, Nothing

RIYL: cosmic-blues, hard rock, blues-rock, folk

DB STEWART releases his new single “Save My SOul (Reborn)”, leaning into the heavier side of his Cosmic Blues storytelling thematically and sonically, featuring heavy guitars, metal-adjacent drumming, and massive synths.

“Save My Soul (Reborn)” untangles personal strife derived from striving to fully be oneself and standing up to bigotry and injustice amid the guilt, fear, and shame instilled by religious leaders and communities in the name of love.

“I grew up going to christian schools until I was a sophomore in high school. From a very young age, many of the teachings didn’t sit right with me. I’m not speaking about ‘love thy neighbor,’ of course. I’m talking about the twisting of religious texts to bolster misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia.”

“One thing I greatly appreciate about my parents was their north star for me was always ‘be kind to everyone’. They made it clear that was our north star no matter what I was being told by other people, whether they be peers, parents, or religious leaders. That allowed me to trust my gut when community leaders were preaching something that I knew in my soul were wrong. However, it also became clear to me I could not inherently trust the ‘leaders’ in my community to do what was right and protect the most vulnerable people in our communities.

All too often, these feelings were ratified in cases of bigotry and injustice where the oppressor wielded ‘God’s will’. Vocalizing my dissent created friction at school and church, solidifying myself as an outsider. While I had conviction about my worldview, consistently being at odds with my peers and our teachers (religious and scholastic) yielded deeply rooted guilt, shame, and intense degradation of self-worth I didn’t begin to unravel until my mid twenties.

Recording Save My Soul (Reborn) began January 2020 with Tyler Mays. Originally, the track was intended to be a reimagining of DB Stewart’s debut EP title track for a rock band he was in with his younger brother, Jared Byargeon. Discussing its origin, DB Stewart recalls “We had just come off tour and loved the heavier spin we’d put on it. Over the years, I revisited it a few times and it just didn’t click until about a year ago. It felt like a song that had to be released around Halloween, so here we are!”

To cap things off, Darren Vorel created a mesmerizing lyric video, synthesizing DB’s inner turmoil with the celestial scope and shimmer of DB Stewart’s Cosmic Blues soundscape.
