THE SECOND SUMMER channels 90s alt rock with a hint of midwest emo that blends into a lively sound accompanied by lyricism that perfectly reflects the feelings and themes of new beginnings, new chapters, and new summers, even when winter beckons.
“Underwater” is a hopeful song that casts an empathetic gaze upon life’s challenges and the dangers that can come with the ways we chose to cope with them. Frontman Steve Gatland shares, “We likely all have seen a friend or loved one become so overwhelmed by life’s challenges that they used substances as a weight to drag themselves underwater. In doing so, they found a sense of peace, but it was a destructive peace. In the end, having hit bottom, they either drowned or learned to tread water and to stay afloat. This song is about being there for those we care for … helping them break the surface, and stay afloat, however tenuous it can at times be.”
On the group’s new single, each instrument builds on the other toward the ear-catching hooks, inspired by acts such as The Smithereens, The Replacements, The Posies and even Chicago’s own Material Issue. The band’s passion for performance gives The Second Summer a unique ability to create melodies that feel like a map to life as a whole.
“Underwater” drops on October 30th from Hardstop Records and the bands new album Sunshower is scheduled for release on February 23rd, 2026.
