Who says death metal should deal exclusively with flames, blood and destruction, leaving no room for philosophical reflection? On their second album, Ego Divided draw openly on Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, embarking on a journey into the contradictions of the individual and society. “The Abyss” seeks to tear away the veil of illusion and confront the inner and collective abyss head-on. At its core lies the Veil of Maya, a philosophical concept describing the deception of the senses and the difficulty of accessing the true nature of reality. In Schopenhauer’s view, the world as we perceive it is a representation, and transcending appearances requires paths to liberation such as compassion, asceticism and art, with music holding a privileged place.
From inner awakening and everyday obsessions in “R.U.S.T.”, “Empty Ego” and “From the Abyss” to the accusations aimed at deception, paranoia and hatred in “Reflections”, “Coward’s Mask” and “Fury of Hatred”, the album gradually broadens its perspective. “Totally Blind” denounces the blindness fuelled by the media, “Infernal Blood Sucker” confronts the recurring cycle of violence, while “Lake of Blood” draws a connection between the historical tragedy of Geronimo and contemporary conflicts. Holding these themes together is a melodic death metal sound built on razor-sharp riffs, relentless rhythms and sweeping melodic passages.
“The Abyss” is the second studio album by the Italian band Ego Divided, further consolidating their melodic death metal identity. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Rock Zone Studio in Palermo, the album features nine tracks exploring the most contradictory corners of the human psyche, the distortions of society and the wounds left by history.

Ego Divided are a death metal band founded in Palermo in 2005 by guitarist Massimo Masi. Over the years, they have developed a sound that combines the speed and impact of death metal with the intricate structures of progressive music. The arrival of vocalist and lyricist Mauro Tagliavia in 2012 helped shape the project’s lyrical identity.
Following their self-titled debut in 2024 and several lineup changes, the band began working on their second album, “The Abyss”, preceded by the singles “Totally Blind”, “Reflections”, “Fury of Hatred” and “Empty Ego”. The record also marks the official arrival of guitarist Ermanno Siino and drummer Manfredi Mansueto, both formerly of State of Neptune.
The recording sessions capture the transition between different phases of the band’s lineup. Most of the guitar parts were recorded by Siino alongside Masi, while two tracks feature contributions from longtime guitarist Alberto Zimone. Mansueto recorded nearly all the drum parts, with three tracks instead performed by Phil Spinelli of Tol Morwen.
The current lineup consists of Mauro Tagliavia (vocals), Massimo Masi (guitar), Ermanno Siino (guitar), Alessio Lopes (bass) and Manfredi Mansueto (drums).
