Independent rapper OLD MAN SAXON released, Oldies: Songs to Clean the House To, on July 19, a four-song EP inspired by a conversation with his mother, who casually mentioned she listens to his music while cleaning the house.
That moment became the foundation for a project that asks a simple question: What if music wasn’t designed to go viral, but to become part of someone’s daily routine?
Released on his mother’s birthday, Oldies arrives during a moment when AI generated music is becoming increasingly common. Rather than responding with technology, Old Man Saxon responds with intention—a collection of songs meant for sweeping floors, folding laundry, dancing in kitchens, and passing music from one generation to the next.
“Some of my favorite songs growing up weren’t songs I chose,” says Old Man Saxon. “They were songs my parents played while they lived their lives. I wanted to make that kind of record.”
1. Heartbeat
2. Real Ones
3. Turn It Up
4. Keep Goin’
Old Man Saxon has spent the last decade building one of hip-hop’s most quietly unique careers. A former college hip-hop professor, TEDx speaker, and fan favorite from Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow, the Denver rapper has earned millions of listeners without chasing trends, instead creating music that values storytelling, humor, vulnerability, and everyday life. His songs have appeared everywhere from HBO and Netflix to Madden NFL, NBA 2K, Nike campaigns, and Apple’s global education initiatives, while his independent catalog has become known for balancing sharp lyricism with genuine humanity. Whether unpacking anxiety, fatherhood, ambition, or absurdity, Old Man Saxon’s music feels less like performance and more like conversation.
His latest project, Oldies: Songs to Clean the House To, might be his most personal idea yet. Inspired by his mother telling him she cleans the house while listening to his music, the four-song EP celebrates one of music’s oldest purposes: becoming part of someone’s life. It’s an album made for Saturday mornings, open windows, sweeping floors, dancing through the kitchen, and introducing children to the songs their parents love. Released on his mother’s birthday, July 19, the project quietly asks a simple question in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence: what happens when music is made not just to be heard, but to be lived with?
Instead of chasing playlists or algorithms, Oldies embraces the ordinary moments that become memories. Because sometimes the songs that stay with us aren’t the ones that demand our attention…they’re the ones playing while life happens.
