A queer Americana record about rebuilding after unraveling—one that places personal heartbreak alongside the larger cultural and political shifts of the last decade.

At its core, Rest & Rise is about what it means to keep moving forward when both personal and collective worlds feel unstable. Across twelve songs, ABBY POSNER traces the emotional terrain of heartbreak, grief, social upheaval, aging, queer identity, disillusionment, and renewal, creating a deeply human portrait of life in transition.

The record unfolds in the aftermath of loss, beginning with songs that inhabit the suspended space between what was and what comes next. Whether examining the lingering ache of a breakup, the strange unreality of memory, or the desire to erase emotional residue altogether, Posner captures the ways grief can distort time and leave us watching the world move forward before we’re ready to follow. Yet the album refuses to remain fixed in despair. Instead, it continually searches for meaning within uncertainty, asking how we rebuild after unraveling and what forms of resilience emerge when certainty disappears.

Alongside its personal narratives, the album broadens its lens to examine the larger cultural moment. Songs like “Until We Heal,” “The Moon Is Made of Green Cheese,” and “Failures on the Wall” wrestle with the emotional realities of living through rapid social change, political polarization, and the exhaustion of remaining engaged in a world that often feels overwhelming.

Throughout, Posner explores the tension between hope and disillusionment, acknowledging that progress—whether personal or societal—is rarely linear and often requires confronting darkness before finding light.

The album is equally concerned with identity and the passage of time. It reflects on the distance between who we once were and who we are becoming, exploring nostalgia for youth, the complexities of dating and intimacy in midlife, and the universal desire to reconnect with a simpler version of oneself. These themes are approached with a balance of vulnerability, humor, and hard-earned perspective, allowing the record to feel both deeply personal and broadly relatable.

What ultimately ties the collection together is a commitment to self- awareness. Rather than offering easy villains or tidy resolutions, the songs acknowledge the contradictions that exist within all of us—the capacity for both hurt and healing, avoidance and vulnerability, cynicism and hope. By the album’s closing moments, the focus shifts away from blame and toward understanding, suggesting that growth begins not when we transcend our flaws, but when we learn to recognize them.

Musically rooted in Americana, folk, indie rock, and singer-songwriter traditions, the album serves as both a personal reckoning and a reflection of a generation navigating profound change. It is a record about surviving heartbreak, surviving history, and ultimately finding the strength to rise from both.
