SOCIETY OF THE SILVER CROSS “Mourning The Night” a protest song for uncertain times

“Mourning the Night”is a protest song for uncertain times and one of the heaviest and most emotionally charged songs released by SOCIETY OF THE SILVER CROSS to date. It’s not only a response to war, but to the deeper systems of tyranny, greed and oppression that keep humanity divided and afraid.

At its heart lies a haunting refrain:
“We mourn the night for those left behind
On the battlefield of the rich man’s war
With a poor man’s blood.”

Its lyrics carry the anguish of those who suffer for the ambitions of others.

It’s an unflinching look at the cost of obedience and the illusion of control.

Musically, “Mourning the Night” is dense, hypnotic and cathartic. Built around three crushing chords that repeat like a spell, pulling the listener deeper into its spiral. Within that wheel, the song becomes liberating, a spiritual awakening through heaviness — a way to reclaim inner power when the world feels lost to madness.

“Mourning the Night” protests war and injustice, but is also a song for anyone who’s ever felt powerless and a reminder that true strength begins with awareness, not conquest.

SOCIETY OF THE SILVER CROSS is a Seattle-based band led by husband and wife duo Joe Reineke (Alien Crime Syndicate, The Meices) and Karyn Gold-Reineke. Their sound has been described as haunting, cinematic, gothic, neofolk, and even “yogic metal.”

Inspired by the textures and tones of India, SOCIETY OF THE SILVER CROSS weave drone-like chants and melodies throughout their songs, reimagining contemporary Gothic music by blending mystery, romance, and spiritualism into one evocative sound. The core instruments are 12-string acoustic guitar, harmonium, drums, shahi baaja (Indian autoharp) and rare and esoteric synthesizers. The result is an otherworldly blend of east and west mixed into a lush state of dark musical bliss.

Their latest album, “Festival of Invocations” (2024) has earned praise from Rolling Stone as “a sonic odyssey that leads listeners through otherworldly realms” and from SPIN as “an eerie, hypnotic spell pulling listeners into a dark, cinematic world.”
