A long-awaited new single offers the first glimpse of the group’s ambitious forthcoming album, Back on Track.

After six years of silence, STREETCAR CONDUCTORS have just released “What Are You Waiting For?”, an energetic, densely orchestrated power pop single from their forthcoming album, Back on Track (releasing in early Spring).

Written more than two decades ago by songwriter Jonathan Moore, the song began as a personal challenge to stop dreaming about ambitious plans and start pursuing them. “I’ve always had big dreams, but I’ve struggled to actually follow through on them,” says Moore. “It took me over 20 years to finally release a song about not putting things off. There’s definitely some irony in that.”

Following a promising start that included festival appearances and radio airplay, the band’s momentum was halted by the pandemic in 2020. Thankfully, the core duo of Jonathan Moore and Carmen Charters remained intact through various lineup changes. Post-pandemic, the recording studio became their main focus. The two set out to take their production quality to another level, with some help from producer Jack Norwood at Miracle Lake Studios.

The end result – six years in the making – is an ambitious, orchestrated concept album that expands the band’s sonic palette while staying rooted in the power pop style they were initially known for. And it all started with a song that very easily could have fallen between the cracks.

Now, more than 20 years after its conception, the song finally fulfills its own message: “Stop waiting for the perfect time. The perfect time is now.”

Streetcar Conductors is a Portland, Oregon-based indie rock band founded in 2013 by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Moore. Rooted in power pop and inspired by the melodic inventiveness of the Beatles, the band combines timeless songwriting with adventurous, contemporary arrangements. The project came to life in 2017 when Moore met singer and keyboardist Carmen Charters, whose effortless vocal harmonies and creative contributions became integral to the band’s sound. Their partnership grew into a five-piece band, culminating in the 2018 debut album The Very Best of Streetcar Conductors, an imaginary greatest-hits collection drawn from more than two decades of Moore’s songwriting.

After the pandemic brought the original lineup to an end, Moore and Charters continued collaborating on Back on Track, an ambitious and deeply personal album exploring loss, disappointment, perseverance, and hope. Expanding beyond the band’s power pop roots into dream pop, shoegaze, orchestral pop, and alternative rock, the music follows each song wherever its story leads. “What Are You Waiting For?” marks the band’s return after six years, introducing a new chapter built on the same enduring belief, that memorable melodies and meaningful stories matter more than the boundaries of any genre.
