TRIPPY HEARTS "Impossible Current" channels feminist fury, tension, and release

TRIPPY HEARTS releases the lush, hypnotic “Impossible Current”, a deceptively inviting new single channeling feminist fury, tension, and release. It is the second single from the trio’s upcoming sophomore album, Murmuration (out June 5th).

“Sinéad O’Connor had just died, and I kept thinking about seeing her rip up that photo all those years ago and the backlash that followed,” Sutkowski says. “My growing feminism was at odds with my parents’ staunch Catholicism, and I remember feeling: if she is this angry, then something true is being exposed.”

From that starting point, “Impossible Current” became a meditation on female resistance, and how women are treated when they refuse to stay small.

The song’s central image arrives in the lines: “Your anger tore up what we knew / Burned so hot it had to be true / And you were an impossible current / You were wild / They said you were a serpent / Did you eat them alive?”

The whole song builds on the ascending line from Sutkowski’s bell-like Fender Rhodes keys. Stephen Samuelson’s fluid drum line and Brent Heiner’s dynamic and pedal-drenched guitar create a sense of forward motion. Sutkowski also holds down the low-end with Mellotron flute for added depth and warmth. The track gradually swells into a cathartic release, carried by a beautiful, melodic flow that subversively carries the song’s message.

“The song explores how women, especially, are expected to behave,” Sutkowski says. “But what happens when we take the names we’re called and turn them into power? It’s a warning, too: be careful what you call us, because you might get that very thing. You might get eaten alive. And all of it happens while we’re still swimming upstream in a culture that isn’t built for our comfort or convenience.”
