GENE MORRIS shares “Do What You Want” music video ahead of July 4th performance!

“Do What You Want” is my favorite original song that has never been released.  The song has been in the making for decades really… until I felt the world was ready for it,” shares Colorado based singer/songwriter GENE MORRIS, when considering that the time is right to release his latest single.

Featuring talented session musicians including guitarist Bill Browder (Denim, Lost Austin Band), William “One Take Willie” Penner (renowned gospel drummer), and lyricst/poet Clark Fishel, GENE MORRIS‘ “Do What You Want” draws upon a timeless narrative that many of today’s hottest artists also employ.

Morris explains, “The song is about declaring that a girl she has a right to choose to be treated right. She has the right to “do what you want to do”.  I admire Taylor Swift’s love narratives and that’s why I chose this song to release now, even though lyricist Clark Fishel wrote these words before Taylor was born.”

Multi-instrumentalist GENE MORRIS started playing music at 3 years of age on a ukulele in South Texas, his first song being “Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue”. As a young prodigy in a musically inclined family, Morris began receiving piano instruction from his mother until it was discovered that he was actually playing by ear and not sight reading at all.

As an avid fan of classical music and a true creative at heart, Morris formed his first band “The Joyous Cemetery” with friends in Junior High, where he also took up trumpet and violin.  An early mentor and collaborator for Gene in his professional career was his friend and yacht rock legend Christopher Cross.

Cross worked with Morris as a producer on Gene’s self-titled debut album as well as his follow up release “Buried Cables”.  Austin, Texas guitar legend Eric Johnson was the guitarist on these sessions that were also performed with Tommy Taylor on drumming duties.

When Morris found himself as a patriarch of a growing family, he moved his career toward his other passion in coaching competitive tennis, including working with champions Martina Navratilova, Andy Roddick, Mats Wilander and Jimmy Conners as well as serving as private coach to Gov. John Connally.

Never completely losing the music bug, Morris has produced several gospel releases and has continued to perform live at events ranging from Mile High Stadium to many prestigious private events, including performing for NFL Hall Of Famers John Elway and Frank Gifford, and in concert supporting his son Micah Morris’s power-pop band Fast Eddy.

An innovative pioneer of recording technology, Morris invented THE WAVE, a cutting edge microphone that performs well for stringed instruments including violin, viola, cello and has also been used extensively to track guitar, vocals and piano to great effect.

GENE MORRIS currently makes his home in the wide open mountain spaces outside of Denver, Colorado with his wife, famed fine-arts painter Pixie Glore Morris.  He is currently planning regional touring dates in the Rocky Mountain states and Southwest US throughout the remainder of the year.
