The creation of La Petite Mort, the debut visual album from ANASTASIA ELLIOT, has been nothing less than an Odyssey of mythical proportions. After over a decade and a half of determination, hard work, and an unwavering belief in her artistry, the classically trained opera singer’s vision has finally been completed. The 13 song, 52 minute work is as much a testament to human resilience as it is a bold artistic statement. The album takes its name from the infamous French idiom, meaning “the little death,” or “orgasm”; a metaphor for the transformations we all experience through love, loss, trauma, healing, and renewal.
Discovered at age 16, Anastasia was whisked away from her home in Houston, Texas to the entertainment meccas of Nashville & New York City, where she honed her much-celebrated singing voice and began the songwriting journey that would become “La Petite Mort”. Over the next two years, Anastasia would write more than 200 songs, which would ultimately lead to a record deal with Warner Bros Records and the recording of her debut album.
Conceived as both a film and an album, the concept of La Petite Mort was born of the trauma and rebirth Anastasia underwent as a survivor of a plane crash in 2013. Ironically, the singer was flying to New York to record a demo for her song “Crash Landing”, the second verse of which she fatefully wrote on that very plane ride. Beyond the impact of the plane crash, Anastasia underwent further struggles, including escaping a sexually abusive relationship, which would further augment the depth and symbolism of the project. This is a record that has traced her journey from adolescence into adulthood, from trauma into recovery, and each trial has enhanced and deepened the project into something greater.
After making the bold decision to walk away from her label deal in 2019, Anastasia resolved to complete the visual album independently. Doing so with her own money, she spent five years learning how to do every element of filmmaking herself: building elaborate sets, designing her own costumes, and navigating challenges both technical and practical. All the while never losing faith in her vision.
Featuring guest appearances from members of Cage the Elephant (“London”) and Dashboard Confessional (“Cigarettes & Gasoline), and a top tier band and production team full of Grammy-winners, “La Petite Mort” is a pop-rock masterpiece. The ambition of the album is audible from the first moment. From the haunting, atmospheric opener, “Cigarettes & Gasoline”, to the forceful dance-rock of “Masquerade,” the wistful grandeur of “London” (recorded using a harpsichord from the 1800s), the irrepressible pop catchiness of “Bones”, and the cathartic resolve of closing anthem “GOOD”, this is a record that refuses to stay in one place. Each track inhabits its own sonic world, yet Anastasia’s distinct and unmistakable identity brings cohesion to the album, however far it roams.
Critics have responded with resounding praise. Earmilk has labeled the album “a straight up masterpiece” with Clout similarly using the M-word, writing it is “a masterpiece and a triumphant tale of struggle, sacrifice, & hardship [that has] allowed the artist to transform into something more creative, more resilient, and more all-encompassing than ever.” Alternative Press described Elliot’s voice as “carrying any note with ease”, and Top Shelf Music called it “unforgettable” writing that the album “leaves an indelible mark on the heart and mind”.
This is not just an album. It is a fully immersive visual world, weaving its symphonic pop-rock with mind-bending visuals and creating a massive interconnected tapestry that announces Anastasia Elliot as an artistic force. Listen for yourself and find out.
