CAPTAIN HOWDY AND THE SUNSET SERENADERS “Little Sadie” updates classic murder ballad

CAPTAIN HOWDY AND THE SUNSET SERENADERS of Lawrence,  Kansas are no strangers to traditional American roots music, adding  their garage-rock/psych-rock style to refresh the traditional American roots classic “Little Sadie”.

When speaking to the allure of covering “Little Sadie”, Captain Howdy shares, “If  there’s one thing old time American musicians got really good at, it  was writing murder ballads. Whether it’s the music or the stories behind  them, American murder ballads have a grip on me like no other. “Little  Sadie” is a tune that has been played by most everyone, but I found that  there wasn’t really a rocking version of it yet.”

Seeing an incredible opportunity in updating the track in a very specific way, the band explains, “We also began realizing for a western themed psychedelia band we  didn’t have a single “cowboy” tune in our repertoire. Our goal with this  version of “Little Sadie” was to approach it like it was going to be in  a spaghetti-western film or Gunsmoke or the Andy Griffith Show.  Featuring the fiddle of Isaiah Sibi-Hackney of the Kansas State Champion  band The Lost Keys, we hope that Little Sadie melts some faces and finally makes our cowboy hats worth something.”

CAPTAIN HOWDY AND THE SUNSET SERENADERS will release their version of “Little Sadie” on streaming July 25th, 2025.

CAPTAIN HOWDY AND THE SUNSET SERENADERS are  trailblazing a new kind of psychedelic bluegrass punk that has never  been fully explored. Inspired by artists like Billy Strings,  Reverend Horton Heat, Split Lip Rayfield, Uncle Tupelo, and more,  Captain Howdy seeks to take traditional American music into a brand new  direction fueled by face-melting guitar, blast beats, and a  live experience like no other.

Hailing from Kansas City, MO, this band is in a category all their own. Their main concept behind this new direction was “what if the Grateful Dead took Bluegrass a little more seriously?”

CAPTAIN HOWDY AND THE SUNSET SERENADERS have shared  stages with: Pardoner, Goodnight, Texas , Futurebirds, Juan Wauters and  they’ve also performed at the Hot Summer Nights festival in Austin, Texas.
