ELENI MANDELL “How Will I Know” remains optimistic when sensing signals ahead

Eleni Mandell Releases “How Will I Know,” Second Single From Upcoming Album Tailspin

Following the debut of her first single, “Music and Motion,” a month ago, singer-songwriter ELENI MANDELL has officially released “How Will I Know”, the second track from her highly anticipated upcoming album. The new song is available now across all major music streaming platforms.

The song captures that delicate moment in a relationship when you first glimpse trouble, yet try to remain optimistic. It poses the question, “How Will I Know,” while wondering if a couple can endure until “the oranges turn orange.” Despite the tension in the lyrics, the music itself is remarkably hopeful and uplifting.

Eleni describes the track as a “wondering song” that signals a potential crossroads, yet remains sprinkled with hope. “What I really like about this song is how singable it is and how it reminds me of folk songs from the 1950s and 60s, like I should be wearing a fisherman’s sweater and my guitar up very high across my chest,” Eleni said. “It’s not really a sad song, but it isn’t a happy song, either.”

The track features a robust ensemble of talented musicians. Beautiful harmonies are sung by the witty and talented Alex Lilly, creating an uplifting contrast to the song’s existential themes. DJ Bonebrake of the band X provides the vibraphone, further accentuating the track’s unique vintage sound.

The backing band is filled out by Eleni’s usual crew of long-time collaborators. This includes Steve Gregoropoulos of Lavender Diamond on keyboards and Jeremy Drake on guitar, who previously provided the guitar work for Eleni’s record Artificial Fire. The rhythm section includes Danny Frankel on drums and Ryan Feves on bass. Feves has been recording and performing with Eleni for over two decades, playing on all of her records since Artificial Fire and Miracle of Five.

Eleni hopes listeners will enjoy the singable nature of the new release and find comfort in its message. “I suppose we never know until we know. I hope you enjoy the song and sing along. I hope you feel hopeful and that even during difficult days of wondering, you find songs to sing,” she shared.

After a seven-year hiatus defined by global isolation and profound personal transformation, the noir-pop siren will return with Tailspin. Releasing this May 29th via Schoolkids Records, this album feels less like a comeback and more like a survival kit lullaby. A collection of 14 poignant songs emerging from the fog of grief, divorce, and the sometimes painfully quiet heroism of single motherhood. To support the release, Mandell will embark on a summer tour running from June 2nd to August 7th.

ELENI MANDELL is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter known for her smoky vocals, sharp lyrical storytelling, and genre-blending style that spans jazz, folk, pop, and indie rock. A longtime favorite of discerning music fans, she’s been compared to artists like Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, and Lucinda Williams — but her voice and sensibility are uniquely her own as she focuses on small stories and intricacies of everyday life, romance, heartbreak and family in the vast landscape of Los Angeles.

With over a dozen albums to her name, including Miracle of Five and I Can See the Future, Mandell’s songs explore love, motherhood, loneliness, and longing with elegance and wit. She’s also a founding member of the acclaimed harmony quartet, The Living Sisters, alongside Inara George, Alex Lilly, and Becky Stark.

Whether solo or in collaboration, Mandell’s music evokes a cinematic world full of charm, ache, and quiet power — the kind of songs that feel like secrets set to melody.
