Garage-Psych Band Vasoline Tuner Release New Video “Chilling with My Zombie”

When Vasoline Tuner announce fresh material, you can pretty much guarantee two things: it will scramble your expectations and it will sound like no one else on the West Coast right now. The Southern-California trio—helmed by sonic mad-scientist Billy Tsounis—have just dropped a kaleidoscopic video for their latest single “Chilling with my Zombie,” and it’s exactly the kind of genre-mashed fever dream their cult following craves.
Imagine a Sabbath-sized riff that’s crash-landed in a Flaming Lips acid trip, stitched together with garage-psych swagger and haunted by Tsounis’ echo-drenched vocals. Then picture that sound given visual life in a dusty teepee, jittery animations, and VHS-warped colors that feel equal parts ‘70s midnight movie and 2025 glitch art. Catch the full interview with the band.“Chilling with my Zombie” feels like a psychedelic journey through time. What inspired the song, both musically and thematically? “Chilling with my Zombie” feels like a psychedelic journey through time. What inspired the song, both musically and thematically?the song riff was initially created on a synthesizer with a straight 4 on the floor electro beat. I just liked the particular patch and the riff came about after jamming away and I later transferred it to bass so I can demo it . The theme itself is from a general feeling , glorification and acceptance of apathy amongst the population so it equates to a zombie vibe and obviously it may be the only or few friends one can have . Zombies . So just chill with one . Or be one and be one with it . Feed and eat yourself at the same time.
The track blends heavy ’70s rock riffs with modern psych-pop textures. How do you strike that balance between vintage and contemporary sounds? The track blends heavy ’70s rock riffs with modern psych-pop textures. How do you strike that balance between vintage and contemporary sounds? I don’t really plan much of it , I usually just record an idea I like and then add on top of it as in anything goes musically and seeing that I like a variety of sounds and textures it usually equates to psychedelic . Plus I like a lot of 70s riffs all bombastic and then the post punk textures , assorted sound swirls . I get bored real easily so I have to entertain myself .
Can you walk us through the recording process? Did any part of the song come together unexpectedly? Can you walk us through the recording process? Did any part of the song come together unexpectedly? Well, the whole thing was unexpected as it usually is . I came up with the riff on a synthesizer at work , then once I had the music vibe , somehow the chilling with my zombie lyric came . Once the rhythm section , Julio and Austin , got it we recorded it in one or two takes . Keep it fresh that way , supposed mistakes and all but they all have their perfect moments that they showed up so I like to keep it and move on to the next song.
The music video has a very distinct visual identity—who came up with the concept and how involved was the band in the creative direction? The music video has a very distinct visual identity—who came up with the concept and how involved was the band in the creative direction? I found this teepee like structure in a field not far from where I live and looked like somehow people had slept in there , done drugs , art on the wall etc and I figured we can go in there and film around it . Very deserted and kind of spooky . We took various shots/ angles and then it was put together along with some animation I had gotten for it , the video director then went all art on it .
The title “Chilling with my Zombie” is wild. Is there a story behind it? The title “Chilling with my Zombie” is wild. Is there a story behind it? It’s from looking around and watching something alike to a zombie apocalypse in a sense of self zombiefication where the consumer is the cannibal.
