GENE MORRIS examines the casualties of “Time” and the burden we bear on new single

Originally written and recorded for GENE MORRIS‘ sophomore album with collaborator and yacht-rock legend Christopher Cross, the track “Time” was shelved shortly after recording it due to a shift in the performers lives.

Morris explains, “The whole world changed. Chris’s career took off and he won 5 Grammys. I became a father to 4 boys while Chris became a legend.

Time” is recorded with Christopher Cross on guitar, Tommy Taylor  on drums, Andy Salmon on bass, and Rob Meurer on synthesizer. That is  basically the entire core of the Grammy winning Christopher Cross Band.”

Profound in its lyrical wordplay, “Time” is a reflection of the  burden of time we must bear and how it is eventually taken away.  Folks  who abuse themselves and others through their actions and in consuming  substances are the one who truly lose.  Building in intensity as Morris’  frustrations at those who misuse their gifts and betray the trust of  friends culminates into a near scream in the apex of the song’s vocal  delivery, Morris shares, “I’ve lost way too many friends through  drugs or substances.  My older sister through chain smoking and  band mates whose bodies gave out to drug addiction. Then there are those  that abuse others by greed or narcissism.  So came the words to the stanza “Users are Losers”, that phrase is spoken as a warning.”

Adding to the track’s intensity, Morris had a specific request of Cross for the delivery of the guitar solo, “Chris asked me how he should play the solo.  I just said: “I want it  to bleed, I want it angry, I want it to cry, I want you to put  everything into it. Wow!  Did I get blown away and swept off of my  feet! To this day I have never heard a more powerful and dynamic lead.   It’s truly a benchmark of Chris’ legacy.”

GENE MORRIS will release “Time” digitally on Friday July 25th, 2025.

Multi-instrumentalist GENE MORRIS started playing  music at 3 years of age on a ukulele in South Texas, his first song  being “Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue”.  As a young prodigy in a musically  inclined family, Morris began receiving piano instruction from his  mother until it was discovered that he was actually playing by ear and  not sight reading at all.

As an avid fan of classical music and a true creative at heart,  Morris formed his first band “The Joyous Cemetery” with friends in  Junior High, where he also took up trumpet and violin.  An early mentor  and collaborator for Gene in his professional career was his friend and  yacht rock legend Christopher Cross.

Cross worked with Morris as a producer on Gene’s self-titled debut  album as well as his follow up release “Buried Cables”.  Austin, Texas  guitar legend Eric Johnson was the guitarist on these sessions that were  also performed with Tommy Taylor on drumming duties.

When Morris found himself as a patriarch of a growing family, he  moved his career toward his other passion in coaching competitive  tennis, including working with champions Martina Navratilova, Andy  Roddick, Mats Wilander and Jimmy Conners as well as serving as private  coach to Gov. John Connally.

Never completely losing the music bug, Morris has produced several  gospel releases and has continued to perform live at events ranging from  Mile High Stadium to many prestigious private events, including  performing for NFL Hall Of Famers John Elway and Frank Gifford, and in  concert supporting his son Micah Morris’s power-pop band Fast Eddy.

An innovative pioneer of recording technology, Morris invented THE WAVE, a cutting edge microphone that performs well for stringed instruments including violin, viola, cello and has also been used extensively to track guitar, vocals and piano to great effect.

GENE MORRIS currently makes his home in the wide open mountain spaces outside of Denver, Colorado with his wife, famed  fine-arts painter Pixie Glore Morris.  He is currently planning regional  touring dates in the Rocky Mountain states and Southwest US throughout  the remainder of the year.
