Back To Us is HEAVY BLOOM’s debut album is about releasing codependency and returning to your inner child.
Built upon a live performance experience, gilded with modern electronic textures, the record moves through late-night grooves, shimmery synth colors, and vocals that shift from confession to release. It’s future-soul with emotional gravity: intimate in the verses, bright in the hooks, and made to land on stage.
Speaking about the foundations the band and this debut album, vocalist Jeanie Marinella shares, “‘Back To Us’ began in a one-bedroom apartment on Capitol Hill in 2020. Outside our window, the protests were happening every day. We were out there too. Inside, we were processing a family member dying at 11 years young, another being diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, a wedding we’d just had, and rent we could barely make on a barista and para educator’s income.
We’d both been musicians our whole lives. I was the kid who sang to narrate my life out loud and Joji’s been composing since he was 13. We met in a university music program, always writing together. But years of financial pressure had pulled us away from it.
When everything hit at once, we started writing again. Not out of inspiration. Out of necessity. Those 2020 demos became the foundation for Heavy Bloom, the band we formed in 2023. Back To Us is the debut album we built from that moment: 11 songs, three years in the making. Not a return to innocence, but a return to the thing that made us who we are, after life had tried its best to separate us from it.”

Heavy Bloom are a genre-blending band from Seattle, WA, known for a soulful fusion of pop, R&B, and funk with influences ranging from 80s synth-pop to modern electronic sounds. Band leaders Jeanie Marinella and Joji Harada began writing together in 2020. As their creative vision evolved, they decided to form a band to bring their musical concepts to life.
With smooth vocals, creative instrumentation, and a knack for experimental production, Heavy Bloom creates a dynamically retro reflection of their diverse musical roots and continual commitment to pushing boundaries. Armed with funky basslines, delicately intricate harmonies, and infectious danceable drum grooves, the group draws direct inspiration from artists like Remi Wolf, Little Dragon, and Amber Mark.
For the past two years, Heavy Bloom has increasingly built a strong local following performing at legendary venues like Nectar Lounge, The Sunset Tavern, and Central Saloon. Seizing the opportunity to open for international acts like Daste and Brooklyn’s Cool Company, Heavy Bloom have recently been featured at regional music festivals like Capitol Hill Block Party, Bite of Seattle, and a headlining slot Fremont Fridays.
Heavy Bloom are positioned to exponentially expand their reach in the immediate future with strategic plans for their debut album release and extended regional touring throughout the coming year.
