FFO: Alice In Chains, Black Sabbath, Faith No More, Chris Cornell, RATM
RIYL: heavy alt-metal, cinematic doom, atmospheric hard rock
Southern California cinematic doom duo, THE OWLING, are set to release their three song Jam In The Van – Live Session on Wednesday, October 7th.
Speaking about the experience, frontman KaL MichaeL states, “We’ve admired Jam in the Van for years, especially their rough, immediate approach to capturing bands and their early spotlight on heavy desert music. Their connection with Orange Amps only made it more intriguing to us—for obvious reasons. Orange has always been a huge part of our sound and identity.”
“As far as we know, we’re the first truly heavy band to step inside the van in quite a while. The session also captures us a little differently than people might expect. The mix has more of a rock edge than our usual massive, low-end-heavy sound, but we love that about it. It’s a refreshing take on the OWLiNG and a different perspective on what we do.”
“We were very happy to be invited, and especially excited to play “Contact” for a recording for the first time. It made the session something special for us—a chance to work with something we’d admired for years while capturing a new song and a slightly different side of the OWLiNG.”
The session’s showcase is the previously unreleased track “Contact”, that explores the fantasy of extraterrestrial beings arriving to save humanity—and the uncomfortable parallels between that hope and religious faith. The repeated call to “tap away until they find us” becomes a kind of prayer: a desperate attempt to make contact with something greater, more advanced, and capable of solving what we cannot.
Ultimately, the track questions whether salvation from an outside force—alien, technological, or divine—is salvation at all. Against images of mechanical systems, warships, worship, and lies, the questions “Have you ever died?” and “Do you ever cry?” point toward something far more important: the vulnerability of actually being alive. The truth isn’t found in an idealized savior descending from above, but in the imperfect human experience of feeling, suffering, searching, loving, and knowing that it all ends.

“Their sound is the perfect mix of 90’s Rock, Doom and Sludge with a very cinematic/poetic approach… It’s really refreshing to hear a band make an actual ‘album’ and not just a collection of songs!”– Audio Eclectica “Album Of The Week”
The story of the OWLiNG is not about one musician assembling a band around a finished vision. It is the story of two musicians discovering what their music could become together.
KaL MichaeL has lived onstage since the age of fourteen. From his early years in Miami’s music scene through decades of performing, touring, writing, and creating, music became more than a profession—it became the foundation of his visual and emotional language. But when the possibility of beginning a new project first presented itself, KaL resisted forcing it into existence. The idea was allowed to develop for nearly ten years as he refined his listening, reconsidered his relationship with the guitar, and waited until the music had something meaningful to say.
That vision began taking form in San Francisco in late 2022, but the OWLiNG did not fully reveal itself until KaL relocated to Hollywood and joined forces with drummer Arthor Quanstrom.
Arthor was not simply a drummer added to complete a lineup. He became the other half of the band’s creative identity. KaL brought cinematic songwriting, towering guitar tones, poetic vocals, and music that often began as an image or atmosphere. Arthor brought movement, restraint, instinct, and an ability to give those ideas physical weight. His drumming did more than keep time—it shaped the tension, space, and scale of the songs.
Together, they learned how to make two musicians sound orchestral.
Their union is built on listening. Each composition is adjusted around the way they naturally respond to one another: KaL creating the architecture while Arthor determines how it breathes, moves, and strikes. They do not attempt to fill every available space. They allow silence, ambience, repetition, and dynamics to become part of the arrangement. The result is music that feels far larger than the number of people creating it.
That relationship became the foundation of the OWLiNG’s debut album, You Don’t Bow, You Will Learn. Recorded with the immediacy and tension of musicians playing together, the album captures a band built on chemistry rather than excess. Its slow, doomy grooves, cinematic riffs, poetic vocals, and gritty ’90s edge draw a line from Black Sabbath through Faith No More, Melvins, Alice in Chains, and Rage Against the Machine—while remaining unmistakably the OWLiNG.
Onstage, that connection becomes even more apparent. KaL and Arthor remain the creative core of the OWLiNG, while inviting a bass player to join them live and ensure the band’s carefully constructed tone lands with even greater weight and force. There are no backing tracks disguising the source of the sound—only musicians responding to one another in real time. Every performance depends on trust, awareness, and the ability to turn guitar, voice, bass, and drums into something massive.
At its core, the OWLiNG is the meeting of KaL MichaeL’s lifelong vision and Arthor Quanstrom’s ability to give that vision motion, power, and dimension. It is not the result of chasing an outcome. It is the result of patience, refinement, and two musicians recognizing that they had finally found the right person with whom to build something larger than either of them could create alone. ‘You Don’t Bow You Will Learn’ is the birth of Cinematic Doom.
