As newest addition to its growing list of programs, THE PIT VOD platform presents ‘My  Buddah Is Punk’, a documentary about Kyaw Kyaw, a young Burmese punk rocker in the wake of military rule, grapples with the complexities of freedom and rebellion. 

While championing individual autonomy and a punk-fueled revolution, he seeks to blend Buddhist principles of peace with the rebellious spirit of punk rock. His journey across Burma, aimed at inspiring a new generation, is fraught with internal and external conflicts as he confronts the realities of a nation still grappling with oppression and the challenges of maintaining his own ideals in a changing world.

In a Burma that is slowly throwing off the yoke of the military, Kyaw Kyaw, his spiky hair dyed blue or blond, wearing studded bracelets, Ramones badges and a leather jacket, is developing the punk movement in Rangoon while encouraging the young people of his country to return to the Buddha’s philosophy of peace.

This 25-year-old Burmese punk dreams of a punk music revolution in his country. Burma’s former military dictatorship has carried out some democratic reforms, but he remains sceptical: in his view, the country has not really changed. Together with members of the punk collective Common Street and his own band, The Rebel Riot, he is trying to raise awareness of the continuing human rights abuses in Burma.

Through his music and street demonstrations, he criticised the ongoing civil war and the persecution of ethnic minorities. He decided to embark on a long journey across the country to promote his philosophy to the younger generation, advocating a symbiosis between Buddhism and punk culture and rejecting all religious precepts and political doctrines.

But while fighting for freedom and preaching the importance of individual autonomy, he is confronted with the difficulty of remaining faithful to his own ideals.
