THE SKANKS
There’s a particular kind of honesty that only comes out when a band stops trying to sound good and starts trying to sound true. The Skanks hit that nerve dead-on with “It’s Return Of My Heart,” a track that drags grunge’s rawest instincts, garage rock’s grime, and post-punk’s nervous energy into one unflinching confession.
The song opens in a haze, a world that feels stale, dreams on repeat, a darkness that won’t loosen its grip. From there it doesn’t build toward resolution so much as it builds toward release. “Give me a question to break / It’s more than hard to fucking explain” lands like a threat and a plea in the same breath, and that tension is exactly where The Skanks operate best.
Then the hook arrives, “On to the world, return of my heart, let it stay, let it stay,” not triumphant, not clean, but earned. It’s the sound of someone choosing to feel something again even when numbness would be easier. The second verse pushes further into that reckoning: giving up on friends, giving up on carrying every problem, asking for a flood just to wash the disgrace away. It’s messy, human, and completely unguarded.
Sonically, “It’s Return Of My Heart” sits right where fans of Nirvana’s melodic distortion, The Pixies’ loud-quiet dynamics, and Rage Against The Machine’s coiled aggression would want a track to live. It’s fuzzed-out and immediate, built for a small room but written like it wants to fill a much bigger one.
For anyone who thinks rock lost its nerve, The Skanks are here to prove otherwise, one distorted, unfiltered heartbeat at a time.
