Abhoria Shares Video for “Ambition and Delusion” + Continues Southwest Tour With Velnias

Los Angeles dystopian black metal band Abhoria unveils the video for “Ambition and Delusion,” taken from their upcoming album, The Gateway, scheduled for 2027 via Black Lion Records. Abhoria is currently touring the Southwest alongside blackened folk/doom metal act Velnias.

“Ambition and Delusion” builds on Abhoria’s reputation for delivering intense, complex black metal with death metal flourishes, while taking a slightly more progressive approach. It builds from mid-paced, dissonant chords and tremolo-picked fury to a full-on blast beat attack. The track also features a steel guitar interlude, performed by vocalist Ben Pitts—perhaps not a common occurrence in black metal, but it adds a unique lead in to the song’s purely melodic solo.

The track, which is accompanied by a music video directed by Hunter Lamar/Digital Myle, was mixed by Herbrand Larsen and Conclave and Earshot Studios, and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios.

Abhoria elaborates on the song’s concept:
“‘Ambition and Delusion’ is about James Gordon Bennett, Jr, a 19th-century eccentric publishing magnate, athlete and generally bizarre person. (In fact, there’s an old expression of shock or disbelief—’Gordon Bennett!’—thought to be inspired by him.) Besides being known for his often extreme and shocking behavior, he also sponsored the US Jeanette’s disastrous attempt to reach the North Pole in 1879.

“The song is presented from his point of view, exploring his desire to overcome his reputation as an embarrassment by doing something he believes will turn him into a hero. But his motives are far from heroic, and are ultimately self-serving, borne from ego and entitlement.”
