Presented as a recovered hymn rather than a traditional cover, “Malibu by Midnight” was “found” alongside a rediscovered religious text central to Family Worship Center’s expanding mythology. According to the group, the song surfaced as a cassette recording paired with fragments of scripture – author unknown, origin unclear – existing somewhere between West Coast mysticism, faded glamour, and quiet escape.

Sonically, the track lives at the intersection of 1970s golden-age recording and forgotten private-press West Coast AM Gold. Family Worship Center approached the song like a relic pulled from another time, preserving its warmth and restraint rather than polishing it for modern radio. The result is a slow-burn meditation built on analog tones, after-hours vocal harmonies, and a late-night coastal calm – reverent without being pious, nostalgic without being precious.

The single was produced by Ryan Oxford (Rose City Band, Y La Bamba, Jeffrey Silverstein), mixed by Taylor Carroll (Big Thief), and mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk (Drug Dealer), grounding the project’s mythic framing in a refined, contemporary studio approach.
