Guardians of Purgatory is a Canadian progressive thrash metal band formed in Mississauga, Ontario, in December 2025 by lead vocalist/ lead guitarist Rylan James Murray Jones and bassist Magnus Reagan Chien. Combining high-speed aggression with rhythmic complexity and technical precision, the band blends the intensity of classic thrash metal with progressive songwriting. Their sound draws influence from bands such as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Tool, Pantera, and Anthrax, while incorporating their own modern and percussive approach to songwriting.
Originally conceived as a concept solo project by Rylan Jones, Guardians of Purgatory evolved into a full band after both Rylan Jones and Magnus Chien, alongside another musician by the name of Levon Steele, departed from a previous band due to work ethic, professional, and substance abuse issues. Sharing a stronger, more ambitious vision for musicianship and work ethic, the two immediately began working together to develop the band’s music and online presence, transforming Guardians of Purgatory from a concept into an active and rapidly developing band. Their debut single, “The Man in The Padded Cell,” was released on January 1st, 2026. Recorded at Wychwood Sound, the track was mixed by Christopher Martins and mastered by Caleb Hyde and Christopher Martins. The release quickly gained traction online, accumulating over 8,000 streams and helping establish the band’s early presence within the underground metal scene. One of the band’s most iconic moments came on March 15th, 2026, during their first official photoshoot and live performance. Despite being a newly formed act, numerous supporters attended the show, creating an energetic and memorable atmosphere for the band’s debut era. Another iconic moment from the band was the photoshoot, directed collaboratively by photographer Oliver Kenchington alongside Rylan Jones and Magnus Chien, focused heavily on visual identity and aesthetic presentation. Shot on a cloudy day across wet grass fields, tennis courts, and wooden benches, the session captured a gritty and cinematic style inspired by street-style photography and classic metal imagery. Using their instruments and a large Guardians of Purgatory banner as central props, the band created a visual identity intended to reflect its own branding. Musically, Guardians of Purgatory focuses on fast, tightly constructed riffing, dynamic song structures, aggressive percussion, and emotionally intense themes. Rather than relying solely on nostalgia-driven thrash metal, the band aims to push toward a more modern progressive direction, taking influence from different musical genres while maintaining the raw energy and precision associated with the metal genre. Their songwriting balances technicality with memorability, combining rapid rhythmic changes, heavy grooves, melodic passages, and layered instrumental arrangements. As the band continues developing its sound and audience, Guardians of Purgatory is currently focused on recording new material, expanding its live performance schedule for future shows, organizing additional photoshoots and promotional content, and preparing for the release of a full-length album. With a growing online presence and a strong emphasis on professionalism, musicianship, and visual identity, the band aims to establish itself as a notable emerging force within the Canadian metal scene.
