“Fakepink” is the full-length debut album from Philadelphia trio LUNISON, scheduled to release on Friday August 8th, 2025. The album was written and recorded between July 2024 and January 2025. Bandleader Matt Vantine wrote the songs on guitar and piano and sent scratch tracks to producer Barrie Maguire (Amos Lee, Natalie Merchant, Wallflowers) before the two started recording the demos of what would become “Fakepink”. They were joined by bassist Greg Antonelli as well as vocalist Michael Kahana, who helped with harmonies on tracks such as “Fake Pink Clouds” and “Candles”.
Vantine shares, “With “Fakepink”, my goal was to make an album that gradually builds and demands the listener’s undivided attention throughout. That’s a tall order these days, but I love a good musical challenge, so I built a little home studio and committed myself to writing songs that I was proud of from start to finish; A collection of kindred songs that would flow gracefully from track to track.”
Breaking down the album tracklist, Vantine adds, ““Fake Pink Clouds” and “Susciety Gurl” are feel-good rockers connected by a melodic synth motif that our producer, Barrie Maguire and I created in his studio in Philadelphia. Our intention was to gradually build suspense the way that a film does. Elements are added and the lyrical plot thickens as the album goes on. Songs 3 and 4, “Shelly’s Room” and “Candles” are individual shots of power-pop adrenaline. On track 5, “Everything Is Roses”, we dialed back the energy for an introspective acoustic ballad that crescendos into a lovely guitar solo and settles back down for a piano interlude. Then comes “This Guy Bothering You?”, which displays Lunison’s ability to tap into our heavy rock n’ roll side while still sporting a good sense of humor. The album’s energy continues to wax and wane to create a colorful listening experience until it bids the listener ado with “Fake Pink Sea”.”
Aiming high, Vantine shares how he motivated himself during the songwriting and tracking process, “I framed and hung a few records on the wall that would remind me of how enduring great music can be so that I’d work harder while writing and recording the demos. The Beatles’ “Revolver”, Prince’s “1999”, Blur’s “Parklife” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” were a few of the records that motivated me when putting a demo together, working songs out with the band, or driving to the studio. I grew up an album person and still find joy in discovering a consistently great album. I remember reading about The Kinks’ “The Village Green Preservation Society” and searching for weeks, imagining the musical brilliance it must contain, before finding it and listening to it on repeat for an entire summer. The goal all along was to make this one of those albums. An album so good, music lovers are excited to share it with their friends and peers.
Selections from “Fakepink” will be performed at their album release event at Milkboy Philadelphia on Friday August 8th, 2025. Lunison are currently planning an expansive 2026 tour.
