Sata kaskelottia spent seven years crafting a raw and multidimensional metal album

The new album Kaaos, toivo ja todellisuus (Chaos, Hope and Reality) by Sata kaskelottia takes the listener on a journey into the labyrinth of the mind and the questions of humanity in a world that seems to be moving closer to the edge of an abyss. The album’s themes reflect on the possibility of staying sane in a reality where shouting and confrontation are rewarded, and where the old rules of the world no longer apply.

The songs are dominated by massive yet airy guitars and powerful vocals that often rise to full-throated screams. On this record, Sata kaskelottia works in the realm of angular metal but cranks the dials toward punk frequencies. The band doesn’t stop there, though – the album also takes the listener into landscapes of progressive metal, stoner, and straight-ahead hard rock, while leaving space for calmer, more contemplative pauses.

Kaaos, toivo ja todellisuus is the band’s third album. Their previous full-length, Sydän on vuori (Heart is a Mountain), was released seven years ago in 2018. Work on the new record began the following year but started off slowly. The process was later delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and eventually lineup changes, as both drummer and bassist were replaced during the making of the album.

“The record turned out to be an energetic and organic, tight whole. You can hear musical maturation, but the anger hasn’t gone away. We’re excited to finally break the silence and get to perform these songs live again,” says vocalist-guitarist Eetu Kauppinen.

The album has already spawned the singles SolaasiAlkumyrskySukella pohjaan and Mannerlaatat liikkuvat.

Helsinki-based Sata kaskelottia released their self-titled debut album in 2015.
