SLADE BROOKS is back with the dark new single “Detox” off the upcoming album titled The Missing Piece of My Darkened Heart. The alternative/electro-pop track is drenched in piano, synth bass, electronic drums and dark lyrics.
Featuring Alex Tighe (of Boise bands Venus Love and Roses Are Dead) on piano, Brooks shares, “I wanted a song that was heavy on piano, just stacked with heavy pounding chords and beautiful lead lines… in a way that you would normally hear guitar parts in heavy alternative music. The drums still have that machine like snare drum fills that you hear in dark wave and electronic music.”
Speaking to the dark lyrical themes of the track, Brooks states, “The song tells a tale of a man and his girlfriend who are caught in a nightmare loop of relapse and recovery. The man finds himself in a difficult place where he decides to leave the love of his life for the sake of his own survival. He has the stronger will to quit but she always seems to rope him back into addiction. I use the refrain ‘This is the last time’. I just thought that was one of those phrases that people use where it’s like, ‘okay, I’m only going to do this thing that is bad for me one more time and that’s it.’ You’re kind of buying the lie and it’s a losers mentality. I think it works perfectly with the fade out at the end of the song. It leaves you asking, ‘I wonder if this person won their battle with drug addiction or not?’ ”
“Detox” is the fourth advance single from SLADE BROOKS forthcoming EP and is set to release Nov. 14th on streaming platforms.
SLADE BROOKS new EP “The Missing Piece of My Darkened Heart” was named after the artwork Brooks created. “I created the album cover after a breakup and I just thought it was also a good title for this body of music. The overall theme is about people longing for someone or something to fill that hole in their lives.”
